Digital identity forms the foundation for trustworthy electronic communication with public authorities. It encompasses attributes such as name, date of birth, or tax identification number, cryptographically secured and uniquely assigned to an individual. In Germany, digital identity is primarily implemented through the eID function embedded in the national identity card since 2010. Across Europe, the eIDAS regulation creates an interoperable framework ensuring mutual recognition of national digital identities. The upcoming EU Digital Identity Wallet aims to broaden adoption further, enabling citizens to securely store and present credentials, certificates, and documents in a digital wallet. Data protection and data minimisation are core design principles throughout the process.
